Air Cabin Crew...

Air cabin crew, also known as flight attendants, are responsible for the care and safety of air passengers during flights.

Before a flight they are briefed on the flight and schedule, and informed if any passengers have special requirements. They also check the aircraft to ensure it is clean and tidy, that sufficient supplies are available, and that emergency equipment is in place and in working order.

Before take-off they greet passengers, direct them to their seats, ensure luggage is safely stowed away and demonstrate emergency equipment and procedures.

During a flight they assist passengers as necessary, and may make announcements on behalf of the pilot. They serve food and drinks and sell duty free goods.

In emergency situations cabin crew reassure passengers and ensure that they follow safety procedures and instructions and use safety equipment correctly. They may have to deal with emergencies such as cabin fires, or give first aid to passengers.

At the end of the flight, cabin crew ensure passengers disembark safely. They then complete paperwork, which includes a written flight report recording any unusual incidents, customs and immigration documentation, and accounts of food and drink orders and duty free sales.

Hours and Environment
Hours of work can vary, and include weekends, nights and public holidays. The amount of time spent away from home may change from job to job. Delays and cancellations could mean hours are disrupted.

The work can be demanding and strenuous - cabin crew spend a lot of time on their feet and work in confined spaces. Bad weather can make flying conditions uncomfortable or even dangerous.

Air cabin crew wear uniform, and are expected to be smart and well-groomed.

Skills and Interests
As a member of an air cabin crew, you should:

be tactful but assertive, with the ability to deal with difficult situations politely but firmly
have a clear speaking voice
enjoy team work
be calm under pressure and in emergencies
be confident, friendly and good with people
be sensitive and reassuring towards people who are anxious or upset
be able to work quickly and efficiently
be confident with money, including foreign currency.

Entry
You will need a good standard of education, entry requirements vary between airlines, so you should check with them.

Many airlines ask for 4 or 5 GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3), or the equivalent, including Maths and English.
You should be fluent in English. The ability to converse in another modern language is desirable, and is a requirement of some airlines.

Air cabin crew must be physically fit, with normal colour vision and good eyesight. Height requirements vary between airlines, and weight must be in proportion to height. You will need the ability to swim at least 25 metres. It is essential to be smart and well-groomed, and visible tattoos or body piercings are not usually permitted.

Previous experience in customer service is desirable, and nursing, or hotel and catering experience may be particularly useful.

Minimum age of entry is between 18 and 21. The maximum age varies between airlines, however, many have a compulsory retirement age of 50 or 55.

A valid passport permitting unrestricted world travel is necessary.

There are two main nationally recognised qualifications which enable those who want to work as air cabin crew to develop the skills needed to enter employment. They are the Edexcel BTEC Certificate in Preparation for Air Cabin Crew Service and the EMTA Awards Ltd (EAL) Certificate in Air Cabin Crewing.

Training
Airlines provide their own training programme for new entrants. This usually lasts for four to six weeks. Areas studied include: security, safety and emergency procedures, first aid, customs and immigration regulations, customer relations and passenger care, currency exchange, galley management, food preparation and service, and personal grooming.

Following basic training most airlines have a probationary period of three to six months, during which performance is monitored by trainers or senior crew. Air cabin crew have to pass regular examinations to test their knowledge of safety and emergency procedures, and ensure official first aid requirements are met.

Opportunities
Competition for places with airlines is very intense. Air cabin crew are usually required to live near the airport where they are based. They could be based overseas as international cabin crew with a British airline.

Experienced staff may gain promotion to senior cabin crew. It may also be possible to transfer to ground-based employment with an airline.

Memory of An Old Cabin Crew...

"In 1972 I was working as a Steward for BOAC. I was working on the VC10 as well as the Boeing 707 and doing long haul trips. On 30th January 1972 I was on a 3 week round the World trip (on VC10s) and on a night stop in Singapore. A lovely Stewardess called Carole (see photo above) joined our crew there to continue on the rest of the trip with us. Well by the time we reached Los Angeles it was obvious to the rest of the crew that we were in love. So much in fact that the aircraft Captain performed a mock wedding ceremony for us! We returned to England, were engaged a few weeks later, and then married on September 2nd that year.

We had both always loved the VC10. It was a superb aircraft to work on, smooth, comfortable, quiet (well on the inside!) and beautiful looking. Anyway especially since that day it always held a special place in our hearts and I had always wanted to see one again.

It was my birthday on 28th January and as a surprise for me my wife had written to the Officer in Charge at RAF Brize Norton to see if it was possible for us to visit the base and have a look at the VC10 again. They had agreed that we could spend a couple of hours there looking around and taking photos, I was overjoyed with that. The next day I telephoned a good friend of mine to tell him what Carole had arranged, his son is actually an RAF pilot based at Brize Norton. Later that day he telephoned me to say that his son had 'pulled a few strings' and arranged for us to fly in a VC10.

We drove up on the Thursday night, met Pilot Officer Kurt Baldwin (my friend son) and stayed the night in the Officers Mess where we had an early breakfast. That day, 30th January 2004, was actually 32 years to the day that we met in Singapore and first flew together on a VC10. At 9 am we boarded a VC10 and took off bound for the North Sea. It was an incredible moment and one that I had never envisaged in my wildest dreams. The Captain explained that we were going to be refuelling Tornados. There were about 23 seats at the front of the aircraft and a small galley where a steward looked after us with teas, coffees and a boxed lunch. Through a door behind the seats at the rear of the aircraft were the fuel tanks with easy access each side. We had the run of the aircraft and could visit the flight deck and talk to the crew when we wanted too.

The moment the Tornados arrived was incredible. Four arrived and refuelled two at a time. It was an unbelievable experience to look at the window and see the planes just a few feet away and wave to the pilots!

In total we refuelled 11 Tornados before making our way back to base.

At Brize Norton we had lunch with Kurt in the officers mess and then went to the control tower. We had a guided tour and went out on the balcony to watch 2 VC10s take off, as well as a Tristar practicing take off and landings. It was an awesome sight watching the VC10s and the sound was amazing. Interestingly we learnt that now that Concorde is no longer flying the VC10 is the Worlds fastest commercial airliner.

We then made our way to the VC10 flight simulator where I was told to sit in the Captains seat. Although I love the VC10s I have never had the inclination to fly one so it was all rather baffling. After a couple of minutes explanation Kurt then got me to perform a take-off and circuit. As he lined me up for the landing he said just line it up as if you are going to crash! Well he aborted that landing and I did another circuit. This landing proved to be even worse. There are not many people who have walked away from a VC10 crash landing!! Great fun. We then said our goodbyes and made our way home.

It was an unbelievable day and I cannot thanks the RAF enough for making it possible. Looking back on it now it seems as if was all a dream!"

When Friends Go Too Far

Why did we cross the line?
Everything would be fine -
One moment of pleasure
For all this pain;
Can you tell me now what did we gain?

Everything would be OK -
Normal as it was,
But no - we had to go to far -
We had to cross that line

I would never turn back time,
For every moment I learn.
It's just things are so different now -
Things between you and me.

Why didn't I open my eyes?
Why didn't I only see
That what we were accomplishing
Would be the end to you and me?

Ghost of My Past

I didn't expect to feel you
I didn't want to see you
I didn't want to know you were here
Didn't expect to know you
Didn't expect to hear you
Didn't want to believe you were near

You're the Ghost of my Past
You never gave me a ghost of a chance

What kind of emotion
What kind of feeling
What did you do to me
Some type of needing
Some type of longing
Why can't you just let me be

Why do you hurt me
Why do you haunt me
Why do you tear me apart
I don't want you to hurt me
Don't want you to haunt me
I'm trying to make a new start

You're the Ghost of my Past
You never gave me a ghost of a chance

Rules For Flight

There is a lot pilots have to take into account when hulling your ass across the sky...

1. Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory.

2. If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, they get smaller. That is, unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back, then they get bigger again.

3. Flying isn't dangerous. Crashing is what's dangerous.

4. It's always better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here.

5. The ONLY time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.

6. The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. When it stops, you can actually watch the pilot start sweating.

7. When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No one has ever collided with the sky.

8. A 'good' landing is one from which you can walk away. A 'great' landing is one after which they can use the plane again.

9. Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.

10. You know you've landed with the wheels up if it takes full power to taxi to the ramp.

11. The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival. Large angle of arrival, small probability of survival and vice versa.

12. Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier.

13. Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another airplane going in the opposite direction. Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide out in clouds.

14. Always try to keep the number of landings you make equal to the number of take offs you've made.

15. There are three simple rules for making a smooth landing. Unfortunately no one knows what they are.

16. You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

17. Helicopters can't fly; they're just so ugly the earth repels them.

18. If all you can see out of the window is ground that's going round and round and all you can hear is commotion coming from the passenger compartment, things are not at all as they should be.

19. In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.

20. Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment

21. It's always a good idea to keep the pointy end going forward as much as possible.

22. Keep looking around. There's always something you've missed.

23. Remember, gravity is not just a good idea. It's the law.

24. The four most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, runway behind you, gas back at the airport, and a tenth of a second ago.

25. There are old pilots and there are bold pilots. There are, however, no old, bold pilots.

Legends

Legend of the Sleeping Ute Mountain

In the very old days, the Sleeping Ute Mountain was a Great Warrior God. He came to help fight against the Evil Ones who were causing much trouble.
A tremendous battle between the Great Warrior God and the Evil Ones followed. As they stepped hard upon the earth and braced themselves to fight, their feet pushed the land into mountains and valleys. This is how the country of this region came to be as it is today.
The Great Warrior God was hurt, so he lay down to rest and fell into a deep sleep. The blood from his wound turned into living water for all creatures to drink.
When the fog or clouds settle over the Sleeping Warrior God, it is a sign that he is changing his blankets for the four seasons. When the Indians see the light green blanket over their "God", they know it is spring. The dark green blanket is summer, the yellow and red one is fall, and the white one is winter.
The Indians believe that when the clouds gather on the highest peak, the Warrior God is pleased with his people and is letting rain clouds slip from his pockets. They also believe that the Great Warrior God will rise again to help them in the fight against their enemies.

The Sky People

Hundreds of years ago, long after the cliff dwellers left their canyon top and cliff dwellings, native people cane from the south into the vast area we call Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. These people, now known as Utes, lives here long before the Spanish explorers arrived with their large expeditions and herds of horses. The Ute families, bands, and encampments were spread out across this large area. Their customs were very similar and all spoke the same language even though they didn't often see each other.
The Utes believed that the mountains were put there by Manitou. He was the Great Spirit who lived all alone in the center of the sky. He grew lonesome and wanted to create something new so he made a hole in the sky and swept all the stones and dirt from the sky's floor through the hole.
Manitou looked down and saw the great mountains he had made from the dirt and rocks. Some of the dirt became the rolling plains that stretched as far as he could see. He was so pleased with his landscape that he poured down snow and rain to make the earth more beautiful. Manitou created the trees, flowers and finally the Ute Indians to live in this new world.
The Utes believe that Manitou had also made all of the animals as well as the birds. It is said he made the birds by taking handfuls of leaves and throwing them in the air. Then the leaves became birds and flew away.
But the worst thing of all happened. The animals soon began to fight and kill each other and that made Manitou mad, so he created the strongest animal to rule over all the others to see that they lived in peace. This was the grizzly bear, the king of all beasts.

The Mountains, the Land, and the Animals

The Utes have many trails through the steep mountain passes that they used when the seasons changed. They traveled to the land where the weather and the climate would provide food and game for their large families. In the spring and summer, the Utes traveled by foot to the mountain valleys where they could grow corn, harvest wild onions, and pick good berries.
During the warmer seasons, they would fish the swift clear streams, and hunt the game to feed their families through the long winters. The Utes dried the meat of the wild game that made it easy to carry from camp to camp and to use it later in the year.
On the narrow ledges, steep cliffs, and mountain peaks high above timberline lived the bighorn sheep. On the sides of the beautiful pine covered mountains, the elk, deer, and mountain lion lived. Antelope, deer, rabbits, and beavers lived below in the valleys and parks. After the Utes acquired the horse from the Spanish explorers, they hunted the plains to the east for buffalo.

Life in the Early Times

Life was very hard for the Ute people; they did not grow corn and squash in large fields like the ancient cliff dwellers. Their food came mostly from the wild animals that they hunted and from plants and berries that they gathered. The Utes spent much of the year moving from place to place looking for food. When the high mountain passes became covered with drifts of snow, the Utes left the mountains to look for food in the valleys and hills, and sometime even traveled east to hunt on the plains.
Before Utes had horses, moving from camp to camp during the winter was hard work. The only way to carry their possessions was on their backs. When the new camp was set up, the men hunted while the women looked for plants and berries. They did not always find enough food to eat. The Ute bands were often hungry during the long winters of the Colorado high desert plateau.
During these hard times, the families often traveled alone. Each family had its own favorite trails down through the mountains with its own hidden berry patches and hunting grounds. Ute families were larger then than most families of today; besides the father, mother, and children, there would be at least one pair of the children's grandparents and maybe an aunt and uncle along with their children and some adopted cousins. A family of this size was very useful. The grandparents could take care of the children while the fathers hunted the mothers looked for berries, onions, and other types of food. It was important to have the grandparents living with the family. The Utes believed that the grandparents were the wisest of the elders and could teach their children the ways of the Ute people.
At mealtime, the oldest person of the family was the first to be served. To take a drink before an older person did so or speak before he did was considered to be bad manners. When it was time to move camp, it was the grandfather who would say, "We must go on the next place. There is no more food here."
Camp life was good for the children. Their grandparents spent all day watching them play and often spoiled them. Ute parents did not believe in spanking their children when they ere bad. they thought it was enough to warn them that an evil spirit would come to get them if they misbehaved. After all, in that hard life, they would not be children long. Everyone know that the young children would soon begin to help the family.
From the time a Ute girl was very young, her grandmother would teach her how to search for food and help her mother. Some of the chores for the little girls were to dig roots, find berries, and gather wood for the fire. The boys would learn, usually from an uncle or grandfather, how to hunt deer and antelope or clear a new campground for the teepees. By the time the children were fourteen or fifteen, they could do most of the work a grown-up could do.

Spring Time and the Bear Dance

When spring came and the last of the snows were falling in the mountains, the Utes prepared for the special time of the year. This was the time when each family and band met together for celebrations. It would be a happy time of visiting, dancing, wedding celebrations, story telling, and playing games. Many of the people in the seven Ute Bands may not have even seen the others during the harsh winter unless they were attacked by an enemy tribe. So springtime would be the time for a great celebration It would all begin with the Bear Dance.
The Utes had a story about how they first learned the Bear Dance. They said that a man went to sleep and had a dream about a bear. He dreamed that if he would go the a place in the mountains, a bear would teach him something of great strength. When he woke up, he went up to the mountain and saw al bear dancing back and forth. The bear spoke to the man who listened to his words of wisdom and then the bear taught him how to do this dance and to sing the Bear Dance song. The man came home and taught the dance and song to his people.
Every spring after that, the Utes gathered for this important celebration. The Utes have always loved to sing and dance and play games. They often danced before traveling to a new camp and then again when they arrive at the new encampment. In the early days the Bear Dance was their favorite, but they knew many other dances. They liked the Bear Dance because they felt it was a dance of strength which usually lasted for several days and which always ended with a great feast.
For the Bear Dance, the Utes played and sang to the music of the morache or rasp. The music of the morache is supposed to sound like a bear waking from his long winter nap.
The Bear Dance became a favorite of other Indian tribes, who learned it from the Utes.

Summer Time

When the snow began to melt in the mountains, the Utes would return to their summer homes. They went back to the valleys and parks where the wild flowers were blooming and the streams ran clear and cold. This was a good time of the year for the people for they more to eat during the summer. Besides the wild onions and small potatoes, they could also eat the fruit of the yucca plant. It was shaped like a banana and was later called the "Ute Banana." They also found ripe berries, chokecherries, and grass seeds. These were sometimes dried, ground up, and mixed with other foods.
Yet even spring and summer had their dangers. When the snow melted in the mountain passes and trails, the Utes' enemies also came to the mountain valleys. The Utes had to watch out for the Plains Indians who wanted their mountain hunting grounds and lands.

Horses

The Utes were not always so strong and feared by others. In the years before the introduction of the horse, they were nomadic bands who roamed the mountain and valleys of the west. The horse allowed them to become proud people feared by other Indian tribes. If their own harvests weren't large enough to feed their people, the Utes would often raid other Indian villages taking their goods and horses.
When the Spanish came to America, they brought the horse with them and introduced it to the native people who had never seen a horse. The Utes quickly learned how the horses could be very useful to them.
When they moved from camp to camp, the horses could carry their load. With horses, they could ride out on the plains to hunt buffalo. Then the people would have plenty to eat. When the enemies came to find them in the mountains, the Utes could either stand and fight or get away quickly with fast horses. This was very important as their enemies would soon have horses, too.
How did the Utes get horses? The Spanish and the other Indians would not give their horses away. And the Utes did not have gold or silver to buy horses. The Utes saw that they had to trade things in order to get what they wanted from the Spanish. But the Utes were poor Indians and often had only enough meat and hides for their own needs. When they could, they traded these items for the valuable horses.
The Spanish needed people to care for their horses and sheep on their huge ranches. Sometimes the Spanish captured Ute children and sometimes the children voluntarily worked on the ranched so they could learn how to ride and to take care of the horses. And, sometimes these Utes stole the horses and took them back to their families.
Chief Ouray, one of the most famous Ute chiefs, was one of these children who worked on the Spanish ranches. While he worked on theses ranches, he learned to speak four languages and later in his life became a statesman for his people in the treaty negotiations in Washington, D.C.

A Horse Raid

After many days traveling, a Ute war party would find a Cheyenne, Comanche, or other tribal village with a lot of horsed. The Utes would rush in and chase off as many horses as they could. When the Indians of the village came after them, they would try to get away as fast as they could, but sometimes they would have to stop and fight with their bows and arrows. If the Utes killed an enemy, they would scalp him take his bow and arrows and his clothes.
Sometimes they would return from a raid with many things they could use besides horses. When they arrived back in camp after a big raid, many people would dome to meet them. After a raid or hunt, the Utes would give away what they did not need. They gave horses and clothing to the Indians who were poor.
After a hunt, anyone could send a child over when fresh meat was brought in. He would sit down to wait and not say a word. Everyone knew what the child had come for. A Ute hunter always gave meat to those who need it. Someday that hunter might need something, too. If a man gave away many horses and much meat, he might be asked to be Chief someday. It meant that he could take care of his people.
As the Utes got more and more horses, their way of life began to change. They hunted buffalo on the plains and had plenty to eat. With more food they could live with their other families of their band in a big camp all year long. Sometimes these camps spread out for half a mile along a river or stream. Life was no longer so lonesome during the long winters. They also had warm buffalo robes to wear and strong buffalo hides for covering their teepees.
The Utes also found a better way to get horses. With fast horses of their own, they could raid other Indian tribes and steal horses from them. They no longer had to let their children work for the Spaniards. The Comanche Indians to the south were very rich in horses. So many of their horses were stolen by the Utes that two tribes became bitter enemies. The Arapahos and the Cheyenne Indians of the plains were also victims of Ute raids.
Life in a big camp was very exciting. In the morning, one of the leaders of the band would announce what was to be done that day. Each band now had a chief or camp leader. Only the leaders wore bonnets made from eagle feathers that streamed down the back. One chief might announce a buffalo hunt. Another time, the war chief might decide to lead a raid. All the men who wanted to join the raid would get the fastest horses and join him. Sometimes the Ute women went along to tend the camp.
When they lived in the big camps, the Utes learned many new dances. They did not have to wait until spring; they could dance together any time of the year. After a raid, the women would perform the Lame Dance. In the dance, they would drag their right foot to show how heavy the load was that they carried home from a raid. They would also do a Scalp Dance or a War Dance after a raid.

Turkish

1/ Introduction

Turkish is the official languge of Turkey, where it is the native language of more than 90% of the population, ie 60 million people. Modern standard Turkish represents a standardization of the Istanbul dialect of Anatolian.

The first Anatolian Turkish documents date from the 13th century. From the very beginning of its Anatolian period, Turkish was written in the Arabic script, until the Latin scrpt was adopted in the course of the writing reform of 1928.

Turkish is by far the largest language in the Turkic family. The main geographic locations of Turkic languages are:

-Turkey (Turkish);

-Former USSR and Iran (Azerbaidjani, Uzbek, Kazakh, Turkmenian, Kirghiz, Tatar, Yakut…);

-Northwester China (Uighur, Kazakh).

It is widely accepted that the Turkic family is afiliated with the Mongolian languages and the Tungusic languages, to form the Altaic phylum. Bolder hypotheses would extend the Altaic phylum to include Korean and perhaps even Japanese.

Simple characteristics:

- All letters must be pronounced. Turkish spelling is phonetic.

- But some sounds are not said sometimes. These are not related to any rule…

yapacağım == ı will do , pronounced as " yapıcam "

gideceğim == i will go , pronouced as " gidicem "

- There's a significant numbers of vowels. They are pronounced as a simple sound.

Two kind of vowels are distinguished (and this is extremely important!):

Turkish Modes of Address

The usual method of address when you do not know the person's name or title is as follows:

Beyefendi - Sir - Daily pronunciation is truncated to: - Beyfendi

Hanımefendi - Miss or Madam - Daily pronunciation is truncated to: - Hanfendi

These are used in formal situations and to strangers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personal Addressing - Formal and Informal
As stated, the above are used in formal situations. Once names are known then Bey and Hanım are used after the first name, this usage is still formal and semi-formal.

Mustafa Bey - Mr. Mustafa

Ayşe Hanım - Miss or Mrs. Ayşe

These are used in formal situations when you know the person's first name but also in informal situations to acquaintances, friends and even to you own family members.

Surnames are not usually used in Conversational Turkish, so the Mustafa Bey can mean - Mr. Mustafa and Ayşe Hanım can mean Mrs. OR Miss Ayşe (in a formal situation) or it can mean just a friendly Mustafa or Ayşe (without the title) between acquaintances.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Addressing Letters and Envelopes
There is an increasing use of addressing people by their surname - especially used on television in interviews etc.

This method uses the word - Sayın - esteemed before the surname directly.

If the interviewee's name is Musafa Kurt, then he may be addressed as Mustafa Bey - (formal and informal) or directly by his surname as Sayın Kurt - (formal and public)

Note that Bey - Mr. and Sayın - esteemed are usually spelt with capital letters, but they can be found without capital letters.

Food in Turkey

Want to know what Turkish people eat? If you are visiting Turkey on holiday or vacation you are in for a culinary treat.
The food in Turkey is delicious. Turkey enjoys an abundance of fresh food produced locally because of the pleasant climate and rich soil. The long coastline Turkey has along the Mediterranean Sea means there is always plenty of fresh sea food on offer. In fact Turkey is one of the few countries that produce more food than it consumes and is able to export food surpluses. One shortcoming of Turkey as a large tourist destination is the lack of foreign food available in Turkey, however Turkish food is wonderful and makes up for the dearth of foreign food varieties.

Breakfast food in Turkey

The food eaten for breakfast in Turkey is similar to the food found in a typical Western breakfast. Fresh Turkish bread is usually served with butter, honey, jam, feta cheese and olives. Tea is usually served to wash down the food at breakfast. Alternatively hot milk sweetened with honey is available. If you get bored of the same old food everyday for breakfast when you are in Turkey, then visit the local pastry shop which serves many delicious foods. There is a special pastry eaten for breakfast in Turkey which is stuffed with cheese and parsley and served warm. There is also a kind of breakfast soup which when eaten with Turkish bread can be a very filling food.

Food for lunch and dinner in Turkey

People in Turkey usually eat lunch at about midday although the food they have at lunch is the same as the food people in Turkey eat for dinner. Some people in Turkey prefer to eat a lot of food for lunch while others save the big meal for dinner, especially when the weather is cooler. People in Turkey love salad and this is almost always served before the main food course in any big meal. There are many types of delicious salad and dips served at lunch and dinner as appetizers. If you are visiting a town on the coast of Turkey you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to sea food, which is always caught locally and fresh. Fish is usually fried or poached and served with vegetables and lemon juice. If you prefer eating meat then Turkey has great lamb, chicken and beef which are usually cut up and served as a kebab. Kebab is a staple food in Turkey and is charcoal grilled before being served in pita bread stuffed with salad and sauce.

Funny Memories

Its 16th March 2005 I made it back to my den ie Dubai.. details as following:

On 15th March 2005 my Guide i,e My "Shi Fu" note(shi fu in chinese means teacher who helps you to learn some skills" brought a train ticket and my train had to leave on sharp 1337hours from Yi wu railway station to shanhai railway station.

Being a human its really painful to say "See Ya " note (Good bye) i don't use this word because this word has so much ruthlessness and brutality that I don't use this word at all and all my freinds knows that part.. anyways.. we made it to Yi Wu railway station which is 10 minutes drive from my hotel.I was accompanied by my dear freind Mr.Shuja and My Shi Fu Ms Caroline Lee to the station.Unfortunately there was no vaccant seat so I had to stand there in the train for the rest of my journey which was five to six hours. I met My loves ones and said "C ya and take good care of yourselves hope to see you soon" and i boarded on the train and there was a whistle and the door closed and the train started. There was sadness and pain in the Eyes of my close friends and they were waving at me and I was standing at the gate and Salute them and after that I lost there sight.

All alone with a backpack and no place to sit .. for few minutes i had no idea whats going on coz i was emotionally carried away with the feelings "Being Separated from my group" the journey which we started together ended with my departure and that feeling of being alone all the way back home.

For twenty minutes or so i was standing there then I looked at my backpack and put it on the train floor and sat on it and lighted a cig and smoked there... I could see so many buildings, feilds and farmers on my way back to shanghai...the people who were in that train I had no idea what they were talking about coz I can't understand Chinese at all and I wish I could learn it in those few days to communicate with the locals but it was beyond my scope and my abilities.. all that i learned from my Shi Fu was few basic things like if you need water "Wo Yao Shoay" that is I need water and if you need Tea you can add "Hun Cha" ie is black tea and if you want milk with it you ll have to say "Neo Nai" or if you need sugar "Tong" so one can add few things with this simple sentence like wo yao hun cha. wo yao shoay etc.. and if you have to say thanks you can say "Xie Xie" and be prepared to listen to this word "Bo Ke Che" that is you are welcome :).

Anyways I was sitting all alone thinking about my trip and all of a sudden from the cabin the train cabin crew appeared and he asked me to show him my ticket i think he said something but i got one word and ie "Pyao" its ticket for sure ;) and later on he asked me to follow him to his superior... I accompanied him to that cabin though every single person sitting in that cabin looked at me with smiling faces and few with stares and few with shocking eyes.. coz i know they haven't seen such a weirdo like me for sure ;) btw I ll be posting the pictures soon so you can tell yourself that why those folks were lookin at me like this :P

Anyways they checked my ticket and asked me to pay them more for berth seat ... i paid them 100 yuans and they showed me the way to the next cabin I went to my cabin and the berth no was 28.. there were two ladies with a kid and a male .. when the little kid looked at me all of sudden he freaked out and cried and her mom laughed and said something to that poor kid he was hardly four or at the most five years of age.. I said to myself "Damn I scarred the poor baby" and put my lagguage on the top and unlaced my boots and jumped to the upper berth on the right and settled there.. the ladies been gossiping and the male was busy reading the newpaper and the soft Chinese music was on and all of a sudden all those voices and those gossips lost there voice and i was surrounded by "Sweet memories"

So many stations came and passed by so many people got in and get out of that train and i was there unaware whats going on just thinking about all those times that we been through.I took out my photos and looked at them and starting analysing the situations when those pictures were taken and laughed to myself.... after four hours or so i noticed that the berth in which i was accompanied the ladies were gone and there was place in the lower berth so i shifted my things to that berth and open up my back pack and took out juice and eathing stuff and i offered it to that person who was still busy in reading that newpaper he smiled and said Xie Xie and i smiled and then done with my meal and he looked at me and then at the photos and asked that he wanted to see them i showed them the pictures but there were no words just smiles coz he couldn't speak English and I knew nothing about Chinese. ;)

Anyways I made it to Shanghai Railway station and got out of the train a very sweet lady who was in the cabin crew came to me and smiled at me and I smiled back and said "xie xie" and she smiled and said "Bo ke shi" you are wlecomed and hit the road while coming out of the station i showed them my ticket so that i can get out of that place.. I walked through that subway station and came out and there were so many people and every one was lookin at me and smiling and whispering.. all of a sudden a person came to me and said "need a cab?" I took out my note pad and showed him the script in chinese which My Shi Fu wrote it for me ... He took out his reading glasses read it and said "Your plane leaves at 0035am midnighte from Pudong airport" and he typed 300yuans on his cell phone.. i said Ta Guile it means too expenssive he laughed and said where you learned it i said forget it where i learned it i took his mobile phone and typed 125Yuans he said "IN meter cab it makes more than 150yuans and you know this" i smiled and said ok you tell how much you want he said .. you tell looks like you know this place i ll leave it to you .. i smiled and i said ok i ll give you 150yuans and he said ok.. i asked him to give me his mobile phone so i can contact my friends he gave me the cell phone i tried there number but none of them was reachable.. so i put my laggage in the cab and we hit the road .... after 40minutes drive from Shanghai Railways station we made it to Pudong airport.. I paid him the money and thanked him and smiled back at me and said "wish you a safe trip and do come back to this place in near future :)" i smiled back at him and said "if I got the chance I ll come back for sure" I entered the airport and went to information desk and the lady told me that flight is on schedual and the boarding will start at 2145pm...

I went to Qater airways office wich is situated on departure lounge its on second floor in the far corner of the airport lobby and i showed them my ticket a sweet gentlman warm welcomed me with a wide smile on his face and offered me a chair and he crossed checked my ticket... and said your flight is on time and every thing is ok.. have a safe trip.. I asked him "where can i find a calling card ?" he came out of his cabin and pointed out to gate 7 and said there is information desk ask them they ll guide you .. and said by the way your boarding going to start on 2145pm i said thanks and went to that gate.. asked them about the card and the lady told me to go to ground floor there is information center and they have the calling cards.. anyways. went there and took a calling card and trying to dial the number but it didn't work .. a very sober gentleman who was i think working in that airport with his badge and id hanging in his neck came to me and said" Sir any problems with dialing?" i said i can't dial this number he said let me help you I said sure its the number .. he dialed the number and said the phone is busy do you have another other numbers? i said let me call my friends abroad I dialed the international numbers and it worked i spoke to my family and freinds and that person was still there and he smiled at me.. and said 'Sir if you need further help we are here to help you feel free and he smiled" i said "thank you very much atleast i spoke to someone :) he smiled back and left that place..

After talking to my freinds I walked back upstairs to second floor and went to a coffee shop there i had Tuna fish and Grey Tea and smoked a cig ;) and then there was announcement for the Qatar airways .. I went to the desk and then there was a tiring waiting stuff.. every single person who was on that plane had excess baggage and i was laughing to myself and the personnels who were there "They did a great job never loss there patience at any time" they have to repeat over and over again to the people that their baggage is excess and you wont' beleive how difficult it is to handle such situations and those people really ie customs department really deserve the credit to be appreciated.. anyways on my turn i showed them my ticket and put my backpack on that wightage machine and i said i want to have this laggage as hand carry "the officer said you have no more laggage i smiled no its enough for me" he said sure sir you can take it as a hand carry .. and he said this way sir .. i went to the passport section where they have to stamp my passport to exit.. they saw my ticket and my passport and then the office asked for the departure card :P "damn i forgot to fill that card i asked for the card and a pen he looked at me and smiled and give me a departure card and pen i refilled it and submitt it" and i entered the boarding lounge.. gate fifteen if i am not wrong.. i went through duty free did shopping well to be more precise i did purchase one thing and that is "Good luck Knot" its a Chinese traditional knot which is made from single thread.. when i entered that shope a sweet lady greeted me and asked me what i want i said i need that hanging red knot she said this one i said yea.. i asked how much it cost she said 150Yuans.. i checked my wallet and to my surprise i ran out of that much yuans she said sir do you have dollars i said no she said sir do you have Euros i said no .. then she looked at me where are you from ? I said I am from Pakistan but going back to UAE and i ve Dhs if you need i can give it to you and she said how many yuans you have in your wallet i counted the money it was 87Yuans left .. she took that money and said here is your knott..i said but its not even 100Yuans she said the rest is the gift from my side i ll compensate it and she said have a safe trip.. :)

I was melted away with that jesture and i said to myself.. "during this trip every single person was so kind so sweet so gentle to me .... it seems like a fairy tale i node and sat down on the chair looked at that knott for a while" and said "I ll miss this place for sure" I sat there and then I tried to contact my friends in Yi wu.. and this time the result was same.. i took out the card and went back to my chair .. all of a sudden the phone ranged.. i ran back to that booth and there was My Shi Fu.. I talked to both of them for a while and during that conversation there was a final call to get on board.. I hanged the phone and ran to the plane.. and then there was a long long journey way home.. the plane left Pudong airport on 0035am and landed in doha after ten hours or so .. when we landed in doha the local time was six in the morning.. i changed the time on my wrist watch and waited there for the next flight.. which was after one hour .. i got on to that plane and landed in dubai after 50 minutes.. after clearance and stuff i was out of the airpot.. waiting for my freind to pick me up.. it took him two hours to reach me .. :P

Foreign monkey king or alien?

In your life, someone u met, be your friend forever, some of them I'm not sure you have chance to see him again. But now I have some friends that we'll keep in touch forever. They r gentleman like, polite, impressed me at our first sight, I like these guys at first time. They make me feel easy. It's rushed for me to follow them out of my city, ShangHai, went to Yiwu ZheJiang province, when we only met each other one day first time, at the second day (26The Feb 2005). I accompanied them to help them understand my country -China, & be their interpreter also.

I knew they need someone to guide them. So I appeared, to give them my power. To me, it's really exciting trip. It lasted more than 20 days. We spent these days together. The day we got on the train, it's a preliminary. On that five hours long train, we chated, we played cards, and I taught them some Chinese. We have a lot of fun. My new friends, they are from Pakistan. One guy's name is Shuja (it sounds like chinese word, SHuja means go to sleep),another guy' name is ShaJi (it have meaning in Chinese also, it means Cutel chicken).I couldn't help myself to laugh when I heard their names.

To them, this is first time to come to China. On the train, Chinese passengers expressed their friendliness to them, and smiled to them. They enjoyed this trip happily.

One word I taught to ShaJi was how to call teacher in chinese. We can say Shi Fu. And he repeated my word. He 's tone just liked monkey king (It's a character of Chinese famous fairy tale (THE TRIP OF WESTERN). So he had his nickname -monkey king. In China, we use chopsticks as forks, spoon and knife. It's new to them. Because it's first time to use it. It's my job to let them learn how to use them. But it's so hard for them. But they enjoyed it. To catch food to your mouth, their contentment did prove the fun they got. When we finished the lunch, Shaji wanted to keep the chopsticks he used, they kindly gave them as souvenir. I can tell, Shaji is more naughty then monkey king.

My friends' feature are different then Chinese people Features. When they walked on the streets, or ate in restaurants, always arose some Chinese to get them noticed. At first, they felt uneasy, so many people stared at them. I told them their are curious. Chinese are friendly, they are kind, it's not a good habit to stare at someone. But they didn't want to hurt you. On our trip, every Chinese gave their kindly smile.

mahvolacağını söyleyerek İbn-i Selâm' ı vuslatından uzak tutmayı başarır.

Gelip mezarını kucaklar, ağlayıp inler;

Ey Rabbim! Aşk belasıyla beni tanıştır
Beni bir an bile olsa; aşk belasından ayırma!

Ey can ve gönül! Sevgili, misafirimiz oldu!
Neyimiz varsa, misafirimizin ayaklarına dökelim.

Ey Fuzûlî! Sevgilinin kasdı, canımızı almakmış.
Gel.. Güzel uğruna can vermeyi kendimize bir borç bilelim.

Death On the Nile

Princess Idut didn't live to adulthood. The limestone reliefs that line her mortuary chapel show her only as a child. Finely modeled scenes celebrating the abundance of the Nile River Valley surround her—fish and waterfowl, a crocodile snapping at a newborn hippo, cows with their calves, gaggles of geese—all normal decoration for a royal Egyptian burial. But something isn't right.
"Idut has replaced someone else," says Naguib Kanawati, professor of Egyptology at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. "Look here," he continues, pointing to a rough patch by Idut's knee in a boating scene. "A foot has been erased, chiseled out and sanded over. And a man's kilt too." I can just make out the hint of a strapping male, standing tall, hovering behind the demure girl.
Princess Idut died around 2330 B.C. She was interred beneath her mortuary chapel, which stands near the pyramid tombs of her grandfather King Unas, and her father, King Teti, at the place now known as Saqqara. Site of Egypt's first monumental stone tombs, Saqqara was one of the most revered royal cemeteries of ancient Egypt—roughly equivalent to Arlington National Cemetery in the United States today.
When Idut's tomb was discovered in the mid-1920s, no one paid much attention to the altered reliefs. But recently Kanawati took a closer look and found traces of unexpected intrigue. "I've reread the hieroglyphs and identified the tomb's original owner," he says. "It was Ihy, a vizier, or prime minister, of King Unas." Like most wealthy, well-positioned Egyptians of his time, Ihy had spent years preparing his final resting place. So how did Princess Idut end up with it?
Kanawati's answer involves a tantalizing new theory about a palace coup and the mysterious circumstances surrounding King Teti's accession. "We don't know where Teti came from. We just know he married a daughter of Unas and became king when his father-in-law died. I think he came to the throne by force and Ihy opposed him, unsuccessfully." As an enduring punishment, Teti gave Ihy's tomb to a daughter.
This dynastic succession that once seemed so simple is one of many episodes acquiring a new spin at Saqqara, where burials span the entire 3,000 years and 31 dynasties of the ancient Egyptian civilization. Focusing on periods when the site was most heavily used by the rich and powerful, archaeologists are discovering evidence for the kind of cloak-and-dagger dramas that would make headlines today—conspiracies, assassinations, acts of revenge, scheming queens, ambitious politicians, and religious extremes.

Egyptian Cinderella by Sherry Climo, Harper Collins, New York, 1989.

The Egyptian version of Cinderella. In this version her name is Rhodopis (ra-doh-pes). Considered one of the oldest versions of the Cinderella story. It was first recorded by the Roman historian Strabo in the first century BC. This version is based on fact and fiction. Fact: there was a Greek slave girl named Rhodopis who married a Pharaoh Amasis (Dynasty XXVI, 570-536 BC) and became his queen. A fellow slave, Aesop, told her many stories. In this version the slipper is not golden but rose-colored.
"Long ago in the land of Egypt were the green water of the Nile River flows into the blue water of the Mediterranean Sea lived a young maiden named Rhodopis." Rhodopis was born in Greece but was kidnapped by pirates and carried down into Egypt where she was sold into slavery. Her owner turned out to be a kind old man who spent most of his time under a tree sleeping. Because of this he never saw how the other girls in the house, all servant girls, taunted and teased Rhodopis. They teased her because she looked differently from them. Their hair was straight and black while hers was golden and curly. They had brown eyes and she had green. Their skin had the glow of copper, but Rhodopis had pale skin that burned easily in the sun causing them to call her Rosy Rhodopis. They also made her work hard shouting at her all day, "Go to the river and wash the clothes," "Mend my robe," "Chase the geese from the garden,: "Bake the bread." Now Rhodopis had no friends only the animals. She had trained the birds to eat from her hand, a monkey to sit on her shoulder, and the old hippopotamus would slide up on the bank out of the mud to be closer to her. At the end of the day if she wasn't too tired she would go down to the river to be with her animal friends and if she had any energy left from the hard day's work she would dance and sing for them. One evening as she was dancing, twirling around lighter than air with her feet barely touching the ground, the old man woke from his sleep and watched as she danced. He admired her dancingt and felt that one so talented should not be without shoes. He ordered her a special pair of slippers. The shoes were gilded with rose-red gold and the soles were leather. Now the servant girls really disliked her for they were jealous of her beautiful slippers. Word arrived that the Pharaoh was holding court in Memphis and all in the kingdom were invited. Oh how Rhodopis wanted to go with the servant girls. For she knew there would be dancing, singing, and lots of wonderful food. As the servant girls prepared to leave in their finest clothes they turned to Rhodopis and gave her more chores to do before they returned. They poled their raft away leaving a sad Rhodopis on the bank. As she began to wash the clothes in the river she sang a sad little song--"wash the linen, weed the garden, grind the grain." The hippopotamus grew tired of this little song and splashed back into the river. The splashing of the water wet Rhodopis's slippers. She quickly grabbed them up, wiped it off and placed them in the sun to dry. As she was continuing with her chores the sky darkened and as she looked up she saw a falcon sweep down, snatch one of her slippers, and fly away. Rhodopis was in awe for she knew it was the god Horus who had taken her shoe. Rhodopis now with only one slipper put it away in her tunic. Now the Pharaoh, Amasis, Pharaoh of upper and lower Egypt was sitting on his throne looking out over the people and feeling very bored. He much preferred to be riding across the desert in his chariot. Suddenly the falcon swooped down and dropped the rose-red golden slipper in his lap. Surprised but knowing this was a sign from the god Horus he sent out a decree that all maidens in Egypt must try on the slipper, and the owner of the slipper would be his queen. By the time the servant girls arrived the celebrations had ended and the Pharaoh had left by chariot in search of the owner of the golden slipper. After searching on land and not finding the owner he called for his barge and began to travel the Nile pulling into every landing so maidens could try on the slipper. As the barge rounded the bend in front of the home of Rhodopis all heard the sounds of the gong, the trumpets blaring, and saw the purple silk sails. The servant girls ran to the landing to try on the shoe while Rhodopis hid in the rushes. When the servant girls saw the shoe they recognized it as Rhodopis's slipper but they said nothing and still tried to force their feet into the slipper. The Pharaoh spied Rhodopis hiding in the rushes and asked her to try on the slipper. She slid her tiny foot into the slipper and then pulled the other from her tunic. The Pharaoh pronounced that she would be his queen. The servant girls cried out that she was a slave and not even Egyptian. The Pharaoh responded with "She is the most Egyptian of all...for her eyes are as green as the Nile, her fair as feathery as papyrus, and her skin the pink of a lotus flower."

What's the use of learning?

The aim in learning is
To understand God's Truth.
Because without knowledge
It is wasted hard labour.

Do not say: I know it all,
I am obedient to my God.
If you know not who God is
That is sheer idle talk.

Twenty-eight syllables
You read from end to end.
You name the first `alpha''
What can it possibly mean?

Yunus Emre says also
Let me receive what I need.
The best possible thing
Is to find perfect peace.

"İnanman, hele bana inanman, beni mesut etmez.

Bence hepsi sathidirler. Ve sığ sulardır. Derinlere dalamamışlardır. Onun için duyguları dibe nüfuz edememiştir.Biraz şehvet biraz can sıkıntısı.

Manda hayretle bunu seyreder.
